Folegandros is known for its amazing, unspoiled, almost primitive natural environment. This relatively small island is situated in the southwest side of Cyclades, between Santorini, Sikinos and Milos and it`s about 100 nautical miles from Piraeus (the port of Athens). See here for travel directions to Folegandros.
Beaches
The island is approachable by high speed or conventional boats. The trip with a high speed boat takes about 4 hours.
- Hochlidia: A small pebbly beach which is located approximately 400 m away from the hotel. Small nearby beaches are Pountaki, Vitsentzou and Latinaki.
- Vardia: This nice beach is very close to Karavostasis. Its easy access attracts many visitors that choose to stay in the port.
- Livadi: This beach can be accessed by a paved road from Karavostasis.
- Katergo: Katergo is probably the best beach of the island. It’s accessed only by boat, from the port of Karavostasis. It’s a long beach with crystal clear waters. There is no shade though and the sun can be quite strong.
- Agali: Agali is located on the way from Hora to Ano Meria. From there you can also take the little boat and go to the beaches of Agios Nikolaos and Livadaki.
- Ambeli: Is situated within a small cove at an uninhabited area and has clear cristal water.
- Ligaria: This tiny beach is situated at the Northern coast of the island. The area around is inhabited and the beach is totally remote and secluded.
- Agios Georgios: You can access this beach by car –dirty road- from Ano Meria in about 10 minutes. It’s located on the north side of the island.
- Vorina: This small secluded beach has no trees for shad and no facilities and is located within an open cove. You will come here if you enjoy walking and exploring.
Sightseeing The Dormition of Virgin Mary: This church is the biggest of the island. It nestles in the rocks above Hora and it’s probably built atop an ancient temple.
Kastro: This is the medieval settlement of the island. Its northern part is built on the edge of the cliffs and offers an amazing view to the Aegean. It has been fully inhabited for more than 10 centuries.
Chrysospilia: This is a natural monument. It’s a, very difficult to be reached, cave on the northeast side of the island, about 30 meters above the sea level and 300 meters long. The walls of the cave are covered by ancient names –mostly male ones-, inscribed as far back as the 4th century BC! They also found ancient skeletons in the entrance.
